AIBC Intern Architect Survey Series

The AIBC and the Intern Architect Committee want to know what is happening with the Intern Architects in BC. A series of short surveys have been developed and each will be posted every couple of months linked to the Intern Architect blog and in the Intern Architects section of the AIBC website.

Please take the time to fill out the surveys to let us know how you are doing. The surveys will ask you about a series of categories such as mandatory course work, exam processes, experience with your mentors, your professional involvement with the community, satisfaction with the intern program, what your greatest obstacles have been, and submitting CERB hours. Your feedback is vital for improving the program. The first survey will review your current and previous employment, remuneration, and your career path. Please take a moment and begin the first survey.

  1. is this a joke? the survey doesn't even work (question #5). i recall doing a similar survey a couple of years ago with the same questions. what is the point of this? what was the point of the last group of surveys? what are you going to do with the results? the same thing you did with the results of the last survey (ie. nothing)?

  2. Question 5 is not working correctly.

other then that, it would be nice to see the results posted for everyone to see.

  3. Please set up the survey so those that are self employed can actually answer all of the questions. Assuming that almost no one is self employed makes this survey actually impossible to complete, I had to lie about "benefits" to exit the survey.

Plus - what's with the 60K cap? Are we really that f*****g pathetic that the range is 25 to 60k? Let's keep the categories going up to 100k to get a better horizon - c'mon this has been going on long enough! Let's get specific so that we can use this info in salary negotiations.

  5. Question 5 has been corrected and is working as it should.

Will look at the range of salaries to see if a mod can be made.

  6. Salaries should also be categorized according to how many years experience one has.

I was confused by a previous survey that had salary rates for "interns", "junior", "intermediate" etc. For example, is a Junior or Intermediate architect registered? Is an "intern", a student?

It would be clearer to see, for example, what people with 5 years experience are getting paid as opposed to new grads.

  7. the average intern age at AIBC is 37 and rising. how the f**ck is someone in their mid to late 30's, who
may have a family and children, supposed to live in vancouver on a salary that tops out at $60K????

this really shows what AIBC thinks of interns.

  8. There should be a survey rating which firms are commendable employers of interns. Likewise, there should be a list of firms to stay away from. Sadly, there may be only one or two firms in the entire city of Vancouver that fit in the category of the former.

  9. Unless you marry well, you'd have to be a maniac to raise a family in Vancouver on an intern salary.

  10. i would like to know when you plan on making the results of the survey available, and what the plan will be going forward. there have been efforts like this in the past which do not seem to have produced any results. what, for example, are some of the concerns indicated by previous survey results , and what would aibc do to address these concerns? could you please attempt to answer this question? it feels like aibc simply would rather not deal with these issues, and instead throws a survey at us to make it look like something is being done.

  11. yes, more breakdown is required for salaries=years of experience.
unfortunately the last survey gave the boss more leverage with regard to salaries. it made him look more generous than he expected. can picture him patting himself on the back once this survey is released, yeah...
